The Fitness Food Pyramid

The food pyramid is a tool used by many fitness enthusiast to develop their daily diet whilst training.

The pyramid is split into 7 catogories. Fruits, vedgatables, carbohydrates, calcium, protein, fats and junk food. The foods at the bottom of the pyramid should make up the majority of your diet whilst foods at the top of the pyramid should be eaten occasionally.

Fruit and vegetables - 5-9 portions
Full of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants  vital for overall health and peak performance

Potatoes and grains - 4-6 portions
Foods such as bread, cereals, rice, pasta, oats, beans, lentils and potatoes are essential for fuelling the body for daily activities and hard training.

Calcium rich foods - 2-4 portions
Dairy products such as milk, cheese, nuts, pulses and tinned fish provide enough calcium for strong and healthy bones.

Healthy fats - 1-2 portions
Oils, nuts, seeds and oily fish contain healthy fats needed to improve endurance, aid recovery and protect you against heart disease. Omega 3-6 capsules are great for ensuring you get those healty fats whilst dieting and training hard at the gym.

Discretionary calories are the calories you have left once you have eaten recommended allowances from each food group. This may be around 200-300 calories for most exercisers. So as long as you stay within you daily calories limit you can enjoy foods such as biscuits, crisps, cakes and chocolate.

So for fitness fanatics aiming to improve theor general health and fitness. Try to include a variety of foods from each group into your diet and aim for the recommended portions for optimal health.

Compression tights that give you the Edge

Fitness fanatics are always striving to achieve that extra mile on the treadmill and that extra rep in the weights room. If only there was a way to achieve that extra push. Well, specifically for runners, compression rights might give you the edge you need to improve your training. Compression tighs provide lower body support and are ideal for compound movements such as running, squats and dead lifts. They keep moisture out helping you feel dry and comfortable during strenuous workouts. They map the contours of your body to help reduce friction and chaffing whilst providing a great range of motion. Can be worn as a first layer or a base layer, either way these tights are going to make a difference to your workouts and help you achieve that body you've always wanted.

For most people a cold beer at the end of the day or during the weekend is something to look forward to. So for those who wish to stay in shape and enjoy the taste of an ice cold beer, Equators may be the solution for you. Equators contain 2.9 calories per 100ml. Whereas a standard bottle of Becks contains 113 calories. They contain zero % alcohol meaning you won't have that dreaded feeling in the morning after a night out. For health fanatics wishing too have the best of both worlds Equators are a handy item to have in your arsenal. The new holy grail of dieting - ZERO noodles - zero fat zero sugar with 8 calories per serving

I came across these noodles whilst watching an American fitness vlog 6 months ago and have incorporated them into my everyday diet regime. A normal bowl of pasta can contain as much as 500 calories whilst these zero noodles contain only 8 calories per pack. They have been commonly used in Japan for many years and have recently hit the UK after a huge increase in demand of the product. They have a slightly fishy odour but when mixed with other foods and spices they are a delight to eat. For those who want to lose weight whilst still feeling full, zero noodles are the perfect bulking food without adding those excess calories. Definitely a great product to have in your kitchen whilst dieting. 🍜

Top 5 Pre-Workouts Review For Girls

Top 5 pre-workouts

For me a pre-workout is a must. Although I could happily go to the gym  without one, I couldn't perform at the same intensity and duration as I would if I had taken one. Especially after a long day at work the only thing i want to do is go home have something to eat and relax in front of the tele. The last thing i want to do is go to the gym. However, sitting in front of the tele eating chocolate isn't going to get me the body i want. So the best way to pick myself up and go to the gym is to take a pre-workout. As a woman aiming to keep slim and toned the main focus of my workouts is cardio. The more calories I burned the better I feel about myself at the end of my workout and the best way to ensure I get that feeling is to take a pre-workout.

Pre-workouts act on the central nervous system, making you feel more alert, focused and energised. They improve performance,  strength and endurance. They decrease muscle breakdown during training, increase protein synthesis and nutrient delivery and assimilation.

Taking into consideration the net benefits pre-workouts deliver, any person wishing to improve their training and physique should consider taking a pre-workout.

Over the years I have taken many pre-workouts. Having attended many fitness conventions I have taken some of the most expensive supplements available. However dearer doesn't always mean better. Some provided an array of benefits whilst other provided very little. The way I found which supplement was best for me was trying each one and observing which provided better results. As earlier stated, my main focus is burning calories, although resistance training builds muscle, unless you burn the excess fat covering the muscles your effort in the gym will go unnoticable. Therefore the best pre-workouts for me are the ones that provide me with enough energy to keep training for longer durations.

The top 5 pre-workouts I recommend for endurance.

5 - K-OTIC - performance igniter
This is a more recent supplement I have taken after attending a bodypower expo in Birmingham. I took a sachet 30 minutes prior to a workout and felt the effects immediately. I was filled with energy and was anxious to get to the gym.
My focus was solely on cardio on the cross-trainer and I continued to train at a higher intensity without feeling fatigue. My usual training consist of 45minutes cardio and i excelled to 60minutes and a 10minutes cool down which I continued at the same intensity until the machine cut off. I felt like I could have continued further and had lots of energy hours after taking it. For anyone aiming to lose weight by burning calories I would highly recommend K-otic.  This will push you too your limits achieving your personal best. Comes in great flavours probably the best tasting pre-workout I have ever tried.

4 - Optimum Nutritions Platinum pre
ON is one of the best brands of sports nutrition available and they have continued to provide top quality products this year with their new pre-work platinum pre. The thing I like about platinum pre is that it contains all natural ingredients which are described on the tub. It provides you with natural energy and focus enabling you to workout to your full potential. It's great for both intense cardio and resistance training sessions. A must for all gym goers.
Good fresh taste with a tingle.

3 - Optimum Nutrition Amino Energy
This is an all round energy booster. Great for the gym as well as a little pick me up during the day. It delivers high quality energy through amino acid delivery essential for muscle building. Personally I take this supplement all year round and feel it not only helps me in the gym but helps me get through a long and busy day at work. Those days you need a little pick me up amino energy is the perfect remedy for vanishing those feelings of tiredness and fatigue. I find this specifically useful when trying to cut down on calories whilst still training hard at the gym. It aids me before, during and after my workouts. With 10 calories in each serving this is definitely a product to invest in without affecting your diet.

2 - Craze
This also is a new product I have taken after attending the bodypower expo. Without doubt this is one of the most powerful pre-workouts I have taken for all round effects. I felt power and strength during my workouts and euphoric energy after 30minutes of taking it. I feel this supplement is best for resistance training which enables you to push one more rep and one more set and achieve your personal best. Muscle mind connection is a great feeling with craze. It was helpful during my cardio however I feel k-otic and jack 3d is more powerful for endurance and burning calories. However for those days working with weights aiming to tone the body CRAZE IS A MUST.

1 - Jack 3d
The best pre-workout on this planet is known as Jack 3d. The first time I took this i felt amazing. I had endless energy after a high intensity interval training session. Long cardio sessions seemed effortless and resistance training became enjoyable. For anyone aiming to explode with strength power and endurance jack3d is a essential part of your supplement pack.
There has been much controversy regarding jack 3d but with safe use and correct dosing a very powerful pre-workout to use to enhance your performance.

Please comment and feel free to ask any questions. I am here to offer free advice and support for anyone who is wishing to improve their health and fitness.

Lady fitness freaks in the making!!!

Don't Starve, Fuel Your Bodies Fellow Fitness Freaks!

Ever been on a diet and restricted your food intake?

Many women think that restricting calories whilst on a 'diet' is the answer to losing weight. Well Lady Fitness Freak screams NO!!!

Restricting your calories will obviously make you lose weight. However this is very foolish and can leave you feeling drained, sluggish and can even cause illness.

Your body requires 1200 calories per day just for normal functions. This includes breathing, everyday movements, digesting food etc. If you restrict calories and do not consume this minimum required amount then you will cause yourself harm.

If exercising and restricting your calories your body will suffer even more and you will start to deplete your muscles after a certain amount of time - however no matter how hard you try you will not keep up this behaviour and when you do give up, you will gain all the weight you had lost back plus extra. This is because you have restricted your body therefore your body needs to replenish and does this by holding on to extra calories.

SO LETS DISCUSS THE CORRECT METHODS

After exercise it is vitally important to refuel your body. Protein is vitally important post workout for the aid of muscles. (Discussions about protein for women will follow in a future post so stay tuned).

However if you are simply not exercising but lowering your calories then do it the right way. Ensure you follow the correct daily guideline amounts for protein, carbohydrates, fats and sugars etc. If you want to control your weight by controlling what you eat then its time to get some scales and a clear mind.

Make up your calories with healthy fresh CLEAN food, such as
lean chicken breast compared to fried chicken. That way you can eat more for the same amount of calories and you won't feel like your on a diet at all.

Most importantly ensure your portion size is correct and know what's in your food. This is where the scales come in. Get weighing your food, know how many calories is in your freshly cooked chicken and rice or porridge in the morning. Noting down calories and keeping a record is the key to losing weight without getting on a treadmill. Do it sensibly and you will see results. However get to the gym at the same time and see GREATER results. BE A LADY FITNESS FREAK!!!

Any questions don't hesitate to ask/drop a comment. I'm hear to help you fellow fitness freaks. Stay healthy : )
